Today’s google Map’s street view option immersed you in a panoramic view, in which you can  move and zoom. The start up for a Computerized, interactive “movie maps” go back to the Aspen Movie Map’s project in 1970′s. The project was creation of interactive virtual tour of the real-world city of Aspen. The project  was created by Michael Naimark together with Peter Clay and Bob Mohl at MITs Architecture Machine Group (a predecessor to today’s Media Lab) and was funded by  DARPA.

More about the project can be read on Naimark website.
